“Golubacki Grad”
The town of Golubac is
located the north-eastern part of central Serbia. The northern
boundary of municipality of Golubac, 52 km in leght, is the Danube
River, which is exactly here, by the town of Golubac, the widest
along its whole course (c 7 km) and at the same time the narrowest, 4
km downstream from the modern-day town, by Golubac Fortress (c 150m).
Golubac is about 130 km away from Belgrade in the direction of the
Iron Gate gorge. The border with Romania is about 130 km away and
Golubac is therefore located in the middle of the Belgrade –
Kladovo route.
Due to its geographical location and
importance of the Danube River troughout the History, Golubac was of interest to
many conquerors ever since,In the first century AD at the site of the modern-day town,
the Romans built a settlements called VICUS CUPAE to protect the n orthern border of
the Roman Empire. In 229AD Tsar Diocletian stayed briefly there. The Huns
destroyed it, but during the reing og Tsar Justinian the settlements was reconstructed. For a
few centuries the area of Golubac was a battlefield among the Byzantines, the Hungarians
and the Serbs. During the reing of King Dragutin it came under the Serbian rule. In that
tumultuous wartime the medieval town of Golubac began to grow up. It is uncertain was
it built by the Serbs, the Hungarians or the Turks. The first written
record dates from 1335. During the Middle Ages Golubac changed hands repeatedly.
There are several legends
about the origin of town s name. According to the most frequently
recounted story, the town was named after a beautiful girl called
Golubinja who refused to be courted by the Turkish pasha and
therefore was left to die on a rock on the far side of the river. The
name of the rock, Babakaj,in Turkish means – Woman, repent!
Another legend tells that
there were plenty of pigeons in this area, so the name of the town
derives from golub which is Serbian for pigeon or dove. Golub is the
root word of the town s name in many languages: Hungarian, Turkish,
Greek, Latin and Serbian. Thus the pigeon (golub) has become the
symbol of the town and its image is on the town crest as well.
Municipality of Golubac comprises 24 settlements with a population
over 12000.
Placed at the very bank of the Danube
River in the centre of the town, the hotel “Golubacki Grad” represents an
expressions of modern architecture and the hotel and catering industry. Cutting the Carpetes
and the Northern Kucaj mountains the Danube has made at this strech of the river a
system of gorges with three valleys separating them: Golubac Gorge, Gospodjin Vir, Sip and
Kazan gorge. In the vicinity of Golubac there is medieval Golubac Fortress and only 9
km away from Golubac there is a breathtaking
edifice of the Monestery og Tumane
surrounded by a hundred years old wood by spring of the Tumane river. The monastery is
decaded to St. Archangel Gavrilo and it was built in the first half
of the 14th century. It is also associated with the name
of the Battle of Kosovo.
